December 20258 min read

Combine your aircraft stay with Big 5 adventures. Here's the perfect long weekend itinerary from Johannesburg or Pretoria — blending unique accommodation, wildlife encounters, and the best of the Lowveld.

Overview

This itinerary is designed for a long weekend escape (Friday to Sunday) but can easily be extended for a more relaxed pace. You'll experience South Africa's only aircraft hotel, explore Kruger National Park, and discover the scenic Panorama Route.

At a Glance

Day 1 — Friday

Journey to the Lowveld

06:00

Depart Johannesburg

Beat the traffic by leaving early. Head east on the N4 towards Nelspruit/Mbombela. The drive is scenic once you hit the escarpment.

09:30

Coffee Stop at Dullstroom

South Africa's trout capital makes a perfect breakfast stop. Try Harrie's Pancakes or pick up picnic supplies.

12:00

Arrive at Aerotel

Check in and receive your orientation. Explore your aircraft, take photos in the cockpit, and settle in.

13:00

Light Lunch

Enjoy a relaxed lunch at Aerotel or explore Hoedspruit town's cafes and farm stalls.

15:00

Pool & Relaxation

Unwind by the pool, soak up the bushveld atmosphere, and shake off the journey.

17:30

Sundowners on the Wing Deck

Watch the sunset over the Drakensberg mountains. The golden hour at Aerotel is magical.

19:30

Dinner

Enjoy dinner at Aerotel (included for Boeing 727 guests) or venture to nearby restaurants.

Day 2 — Saturday

Kruger Safari Day

05:00

Early Wake-Up

Gates open at sunrise — the early hours offer the best wildlife sightings. Quick coffee and rusks before departure.

05:30

Drive to Orpen Gate

45 minutes to Kruger's Orpen Gate. Arrive just as the gates open for first entry.

06:00–12:00

Self-drive through the park. The Orpen/Satara area is known for lion and cheetah sightings. Stop at waterholes and keep your eyes peeled.

12:00

Brunch at Satara Rest Camp

Fill up at the camp restaurant or enjoy your packed picnic at a designated spot.

13:00–16:00

Afternoon Game Drive

The midday heat slows things down, but elephants and hippos are active. Loop back towards Orpen.

16:30

17:30

Arrival & Refresh

Quick shower and change. Share your sightings stories over sundowners.

19:00

Celebrate your safari with good food and great company. Star-gazing afterwards — the Lowveld skies are spectacular.
