The short version: Hoedspruit is about 5 hours' drive from Johannesburg, or a short flight into Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport. Getting There from Joburg and Pretoria
By road: about 5 hours
The scenic route is the N4 east to Belfast, the R540 through Dullstroom to Lydenburg, then the R36 via Ohrigstad, the Abel Erasmus Pass and the J.G. Strijdom Tunnel down into the Lowveld. From Pretoria, allow about 4½ hours. Stop in Dullstroom for breakfast on the way. The pass is the most dramatic stretch of the drive, so plan to cross it in daylight.
By air: Johannesburg to Hoedspruit
Airlink flies between OR Tambo and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) twice a day, and CemAir also flies the route. There are daily flights from Cape Town too. Aerotel is about 10 minutes from the airport, so a Friday afternoon flight has you on the Sky Deck by sundown. Check the airlines for current times and fares.
The Weekend Plan
Friday: arrive and sundowners on the wing
Check-in runs from 14:00 to 20:00; if you are driving up after work, let us know your arrival time. Drop your bags in your cabin, explore the original 737 cockpit, then head to the Sky Deck. Gin-tail happy hour runs from 16:00 to 18:00 (R69 for any signature gin-tail), and the sun sets behind the Drakensberg.
Saturday: Kruger or the Panorama Route
Option 1: Kruger National Park. Orpen Gate is about 64 km away, roughly an hour's drive. Leave early, because gates open at 05:30 or 06:00 depending on the month, and spend the day on the roads around Orpen and Satara. Back by late afternoon, have dinner at The Runway: steaks, parathas and South African tapas under the aircraft.
Sunday: an easy morning, then home
Breakfast is included. Before the drive home, choose something close by: a boat trip on Blyde Dam at the foot of the canyon, the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, or Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Check-out is at 10:00.
